What Are Rats?
In this article, we'll talk about rats. We'll discuss where they live, how they choose their habitats, and what they eat.
Rats are medium-sized rodents that originated in Asia and Australia. They spread throughout the world and now exist in more than 60 different species.
Rats can be large or small. The biggest ones weigh up to 5 pounds and are the size of a large housecat. They can come in any color, including black, brown, gray, and white.
The only way to get rid of rats is to get rid of the three things they need to survive: food, water, and shelter.

Food
Rats live in places where humans are living or where there is food for them. They can eat almost anything, but they especially like garbage.
Water
Rats can survive without water for a month or more. This is because rats eat enough food to get the moisture they need. When rats need to drink, they can find enough water in drains, pet dishes, or condensation on walls.
Shelter
Rats live wild in weeds and grasses. In homes, rats will take cover under furniture, behind walls, or in other dark corners of the house. Rats are also famous for building nests inside of and under appliances.
Rats Reproduce Rapidly
Female rats can mate 500 times in just six hours! And brown rats can give birth to 22 babies at once. Can you imagine?! With gestation periods of less than a month, you can see how populations grow quickly and get out of control.
As rat populations increase in your home, you'll notice droppings and other damage.

Rodent Control
Rats & Disease
The mere presence of rats on your property is a threat to you. These dirty rodents can carry a variety of diseases. It's been recently discovered that they transport Hepatitis E. It's also been revealed that they carry typhus, another disease.
Flea-borne typhus is a disease caused by a bacteria that lives in fleas. Flea-borne typhus spreads to humans through contact with fleas. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) flea-borne typhus is a disease caused by a bacteria called Rickettsia typhi. It spreads to people through contact with infected fleas.
Fleas become infected when they bite infected animals, such as rats, cats, or opossums. When an infected flea bites a person or animal, the bite breaks the skin, causing a wound. Fleas poop when they feed. The poop (also called flea dirt) can then be rubbed into the bite wound or other wounds, causing infection. People can also breathe in infected flea dirt or rub it into their eyes.

4 Signs Of A Rat Infestation In Your Home
If you are unsure if you have a rat infestation in your home, look for the following signs:
Strange Smells & Sounds
Rats are very loud and give off a powerful smell. They're also usually very loud and noisy in your home. These signs are subtle, but they're an indication that rodents are nearby.
Droppings & Smears
Rats leave feces behind as they move through your home. You may notice small, dark, pellet-shaped feces along rat pathways. Since rats have poor eyesight, they also create and maintain established routes along the walls.
As they travel these routes, they leave grease smears and smudges along the walls.
Footprints
Rats are often found in places you don't expect them to be. They leave copious amounts of rat droppings in places they have traveled.
Poop alert: Rats like to leave behind small turds everywhere they go. If you suspect rats are in your home, sprinkle some baking soda on the floor and check for fresh tracks in the morning.
Damage
Finally, rats can cause a lot of damage in your home. They can eat through your electrical wires, gnaw on furniture, storage containers and paper, and contaminate food left out on the counter. They leave droppings and urine throughout your home that can spread disease.

How long does it take a professional to get rid of rats?
How long it will take to get rid of all the mice in your home depends on a lot of different factors.
Your home should be inspected to check for and eliminate possible ways that rats and mice can get inside.
Once the home is reasonably rodent-proof, then there are some control measures that will be effective, but getting rid of them will take many days or weeks, not hours, unless you use poison gas in your home. This means sealing up the house, pumping toxic gas inside it and leaving it there for a while.
If you have just a few mice, it should be quick, but it is very likely that if you see a mouse, you have dozens. It is necessary to take quick action as one female can produce up to 100 offspring or more in a year. Gestation usually takes place after about 21 days of having a baby, and when the female gives birth, the male will carry on reproducing as soon as the female gives birth.
Female rats can produce several litters of 4 to 10 babies every day. It is normal for females to give birth to their offspring after they are sexually mature – usually in a period of one to one and a half months with the female giving birth every 25 days or so. So that means that all the babies that a single female will have produced in a year, and all the babies that they have given birth to, will have at least 100,000 offspring in total.
Depending on the problem, it may take several weeks to get rid of the rats using poison or other methods.
Rats that are infesting your home need to be removed as quickly as possible.
There are several things that you can do to ensure that you will get rid of a rat infestation quickly. Start by making sure that any other food sources are hidden from view. Keep food scraps, compost heaps and pet food stored properly in sealed food containers. Rats will instinctively go to the traps or baits that are placed around their houses. Rats are very suspicious and will only eat food that they know is safe. They will stay away from any food supplies that are unsafe if given the choice
Killing Rats With Salt
It is a common misconception that rats will die if they consume salt, which is not always the case. Rats, like humans, only need a certain amount of salt to survive. They will eventually consume enough salt to die of dehydration as the salt will make it impossible for the rat to drink enough water. The problem is that rats will stop eating after a certain point, so it is very difficult to do this on your own
What are the signs of a rat infestation ?
Rat infestations or a mouse infestation are not always apparent, but signs can include scurrying sounds, small rodents in the basement or attic, droppings, signs of chewing, and gnawing of wood or plastic objects.
Why do rats die outside houses after eating rat poison?
Although rats that have eaten rat poison typically leave their homes to seek water, that is not always the case. It's not as though rat poison kills a rat if it attempts to force it to leave the house. Rats are very likely to die inside their houses if a poison is used to kill them.
Dehydrating substances, such as finely ground corn, cause the rats to become dehydrated. Rats are killed when they go outside to look for water. Even so, it is not guaranteed that a rat will survive the poison. Even though it is not always that way, it is much more environmentally friendly to kill rats outside houses.
